1. The worst Publicity Advice
A Client recently said to me, “I have heard from more than a few publicity experts that, when doing an interview, if the interview isn’t going as you want then it is important to hijack the interview and get your message across so when the interview is done you can feel good about getting your message out.”
I laughed and said, “Are you for real? Seriously? PR people say to do this?”
Not the good ones!
This is a BRUTAL idea and message.
It might work for Anne Coulter (American Conservative social and political commentator), but if YOU try it…you’ll be throwing your radio career down the tube!
Here’s how the show interviews work:
It’s MY show…so the Interview is done MY way. It’s that simple. If you don’t play the way I want you to in MY sandbox…you WILL get the boot!
Can you imagine doing this to Bill O’Reilly? Howard Stern? Or…
They would rip you apart…and there would be no way for you to recover. PLUS, once they got rid of you they could CONTINUE slogging you if things turned really bad.
I can tell you for sure that when I get a sense of a radio guest not wanting to play properly and I feel like they are just there to drive traffic to their website or sell their book…I WILL GET THEM OFF THE AIR AS FAST AS POSSIBLE.
As I’ve stressed MANY times, your goal with your first interview on a station SHOULDN’T BE to sell stuff, it should be to prove you are great and then get invited back again and again. That is where the magic really happens!
Before I move on…
Earlier I mentioned Anne Coulter…well even she can’t win them all. Listen to what happened when she called the Adam Corolla Radio show late, and tried to be snarky about it.
***BEWARE, this clip has some swearing at the end*** But I think it proves my point.
2. What works for Media
I was listening to the news this week. They did a story on a Canadian who wants to spend this year learning to live off products Made in Canada. There was a similar story in the USA, but we’ll focus on www.onecanadianoneyear.com
He will only watch Canadian TV, listen to Canadian Radio, buy Canadian furniture, wear Canadian clothes and so on…
So why did he get national publicity?
Because he won’t just be a one-time guest…he’s created a story the media can follow all year long. Every month, we can check in and see how he’s doing…or if he’s failed yet.
Getting media once is a good thing…getting media calling again and again…now that’s priceless!
