Workers in France have won the right to not have to keep up with business in their off-hours, with a new labor law going into effect on New Year's Day that gives employees the "right to disconnect" from work-related email, smartphones and other electronic communication once the business day is over.
The French Ministry of Labor said in a statement, "These measures are designed to ensure respect for rest periods and . . . balance between work and family and personal life." French unions have long pushed for such a regulation, saying digital technology is forcing employees to work outside the typical work week. Under the new rule, companies with 50 or more employees will have to negotiate new out-of-office email guidelines with their workers, and will have to regulate the email use to make sure employees get a break from the office during their off-hours.
