How long does it take to become a great interview? I think it's like answering how long does it take to become a professional athlete. You don't become great overnight…even if you think your topic is super hot. This has been proven first hand to me a couple times from interviews I've done on the Wayne and Jayne show. I remember interviewing Tim Sanders when he released his first book "Love is the Killer App".
The interview was OK. I thought it would be better because of his years spent performing on stage with his bands…but still it was alright. When I interviewed him for his second book "The Likeability Factor" it was night and day to the last interview. He had really found his groove and I bet if I was to talk to him again now, he would be even better. He's been doing interviews, seminars, and coaching on these books since 2003.
Well it happened again. I have been interviewing the Fit Speakers Kary and Uche Odiatu every January since 2004. Friday we had an interview and I was blown away by the confidence, and performance from Kary and Uche. I even said after the interview, "you guys are ready for Oprah, Larry King, and Glenn Beck" In other words, they are ready for the majors.
Looking back now, if Oprah called 3 years ago, they would have done OK, but if she calls now, they will blow her away and probably be back many times.
It's very important for you to know that being a great interview and selling products doesn't happen in 5 or 10 interviews. It's a multi-year journey of mastery!
I'm very proud of how Kary and Uche have done…as I met Uche in Sept 2003 when I was on the very beginning of my Publicity coaching journey…and we keep in touch. It's incredible when you see friends succeed! Congrats guys!
