If you want to know the secret to getting on the radio…there really isn’t one. I’d say most of all it’s luck and being at the right place at the right time. Do you have an elevator speech? When you meet people tell them what you do. I’ll bet someone will say something like ,â€My wife (brother, mother, cousin) is on the air at WABC and you might be perfect for her show.†It happens a lot.
About 6 months ago I was contacted by someone who wanted to be on my radio show. I wanted to have her but I didn’t feel the topic was right for my audience. Every month she’d drop a line about a different topic and I would have to decline because it didn’t fit format or the show or whatever. I was starting to feel bad about saying no so often.
Finally for New Years she sent me a note saying Resolutions are Stupid! BINGO! That was it. She sent the note on a Wednesday and the following Monday she was on the Wayne and Jayne show. I’ve got to tell you she was outstanding as a guest!
What was the difference? She connected with my audience and with Jayne and I. She gave us solutions about what to do instead of resolutions.
Now that she has been introduced to my audience and people liked her…she’ll be back! Oh and I happily sent a note to some of my radio friends recommending her for their shows too. Hollis Polk, thank you for being persistent!
