I have a very upbeat positive, fun morning radio show. We are always looking at the lighter side of life and often trying to help people through their very stressful lives.
Every once in awhile, something tough happens and it sends our show into a tailspin.
It happened this morning when we received word that a wonderful local woman was killed in a car accident. She was the greatest grocery store cashier you could ever dream to have. I’d say she was the world’s best. She made every person feel special. When I walked in to the store she’d always look up and say, “Hey, it's WK (RP) in Cincinnati†and would smile ear to ear.
It’s so tough to continue doing a radio show when listeners are calling and asking if the story they’ve heard around town is true. It broke my heart to have to tell some people that Corrine is gone.
So how do I as a radio host deal with these situations? I could bury the feelings and continue the show like everything is OK. After all, many of my listeners don’t know Corrine. But for me, radio is about being real, so I cracked the microphone and talked about my heavy heart and wished all those that lost a friend my condolences.
Honesty is best. Even though I never spent more than 30 seconds in conversation with her, I feel like I’ve lost a friend. Thanks for showing us how to live Corrine; we’re all better having known you.
