A TOP #3 no-no when Pitching Media

If we had a list of the top things you should never do while pitching media, I think this could be near the top of the list.

It’s happened again – a Major pitching flub that you NEVER want to do while connecting with media. If you want a radio station to promote you for free, then don’t cc competing stations asking for their help too. Yup, that’s what I saw today…and then the follow up comments I heard from producers and hosts wasn’t very nice. Needless to say, it made the joke of the day…and she won’t be contacted back by anyone.

Thankfully this isn’t an everyday occurrence, but it does happen. The problem is neither station wants to get involved with you once you screw up and send an email to everyone in both stations. They want to feel your loyalty.

So how do you do this?

Spend just a short amount of time doing a little research for each show before you make contact. I recently reached out to 25 radio shows. I easily could have just put their names in BCC and hit send. BUT instead I took a few hours to learn something about each of them and then started each email with a true compliment.

As a Producer and host, it is so evident that most people never do any research…so for those of you who do…Thank You – we do take notice!
