Rita Crawford sent an email to our radio station saying she’d do anything to get on the Wayne and Jayne show – She would even bring donuts! She had just moved to the area and said how much she enjoyed the station and the show. I was flattered but what was her story? Why would she come on my show?
I called and found out she watched her 8-year-old stepson die. While on a bike ride celebrating the first day of school, he had been run over by a truck. She went on to say she had to do something to keep her mind busy during such a horrific time. She always enjoyed quilting so she created a memory quilt for her husband with photos of little Kristopher.
The story touched my heart and I brought her on the show to talk about the memory quilts and let people know how they could order one with photos of their relatives, children and even pets.
After the interview, I still wanted to do more to help – so I called the TV station and sold them on doing a feature on her. Next she read one of my blogs about how to make contact with the media….and started getting booked by small newpapers around BC.
She just sent me the latest news that she is being featured in todays edition of the Vancouver Sun Newspaper. (Having one of the largest readerships in BC )
I am proud of all that Rita has accomplished in the 3 weeks since our interview. She found success with the media because she understood how to tell her story and went out on a limb and asked to get on her local radio station.
If you have a story people can relate to, the media is ready to share it.
I tell you this to share her story but also to inspire you to make a call and befriend someone in the media.
