I’ve been hosting a morning radio show for 23 years and I’ve interviewed all kinds of people from almost every topic imaginable. With this experience, I am very tuned to someone’s authenticity especially with over the phone interviews!
The #1 thing we want out of an interview is an authentic interview with a real person who can inspire, entertain, and educate my audience all while being my best friend for 5 minutes on the radio.
I had a Motivational Speaker call my show last month to talk about making a few minor changes that can really make a difference in 2019.
I asked him one of my very standard questions early on about how does he personally start his day? Does he have any success rituals that a listener could learn about?
He says the first thing he likes to do is wake up – open his phone – check his emails – and read all the testimonials he gets from the clients he works with every day.
So my BS sensors jump to high alert – so I ask for clarification – you mean you read a folder of saved positive messages. And he says, oh no, every day I get people who love working with me and they are so happy at how much I help their business that they send me daily emails of praise.
My co-host and I were giving each other the strangest looks of…WTH? (The clean version What the Heck).
We asked a couple other questions and they guy seemed to have trouble giving us straight answers.
Needless to say, we were both over this interview before it even really started.
WE called BS and wanted to get him off the air.
My advice is always – have something to say – and NEVER BS your interviewer – they can usually tell if you are lying!

PS: And if you think we were just being hard on him – a listener texted us immediately after saying – "I think that life coach needs a life coach LOL"
