How do I now this is a great topic? Because how many times do you hit the Snooze Button? If it was hurting you – I bet you'd pay attention!
Here's what the study said:
HITTING THE SNOOZE BUTTON CAN HELP OR HURT YOU, DEPENDING ON WHEN YOU HIT IT: How often do you hit "snooze" in the morning? It's incredibly tempting, but is it always the best idea? Jeanne Duffy, a neuroscientist at Harvard Medical School says if you push the snooze button for a half hour, "You're probably getting worse sleep during those 30 minutes than you would if you just set your alarm 30 minutes later." There are exceptions, but it all depends on what stage of sleep you were in when your alarm goes off in the first place.
For example, if your initial alarm wakes you up from the deepest stages of slow-wave sleep "you might have no idea where you are," says Duffy. In that case, snoozing might actually be helpful, allowing you to wake up from a different stage of sleep, like REM. REM is when the body is closest to its wakeful state. Beware, though. If you wake up from the REM stage initially and then hit snooze you could potentially get into a deeper state of sleep which would of course make things worse. (PopSci)
This is a GREAT radio topic because before we have you on to discuss it, we could very easily do a facebook or web poll of our listeners to get them engaged. Now instead of just listening, they are truly invested. They want to know if hitting snooze is good or bad and why.
These are the kinds of topics that morning radio is screaming for!
