Statistics compiled in Britain and the United States show that sexually transmitted diseases among older adults have been rising at an alarming rate.
A study by researchers at Kings College and Saint Thomas's Hospital in London finds rates of S-T-D's such as chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis have doubled for people in their 50s, 60s and 70s in the past decade.
In the U-S, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says reported cases of syphilis and chlamydia in people aged 45 to 64 nearly tripled between 2000 and 2010.
And the numbers of older people with H-I-V nearly doubled. Researchers says there's no scientific data to explain the trend. However they speculate that rising divorce rates, the explosion drugs such as Viagra, and the greater reluctance of older men to use condoms may be factors. (ABC)
