Oh boy. I heard it again. "I don't need media training! I was on the radio a couple years ago and I know how to talk."
"Alright" I say, so you are getting lots of interviews to promote your book now, right?
He says, "…well locally yes but nationally no. People who interviewed me for my last book aren't getting back to me."
The first thing I think when they won't book you again is that you were not a good interview. It's frank and simple and us radio producers are just too nice to tell you that. So we avoid you.
Secondly, when I asked Mr X to send me his media release I understand why they aren't calling him.
The Subject line was awful and screamed I want you to give me free advertising.
AND
The body was all about MR and more I want free advertising.
In fact I wouldn't even have opened the email. I would have deleted it too.
Sad thing is, MR X has a smoking hot topic that if played right could get him media coverage everywhere!
MR X and I are meeting this week to fix the problems. And I'll keep you posted on how he does.
Media releases are about identifying a problem. Telling me my listeners care about it…and then telling me how to fix the problem.
Do that without promoting yourself and you'll go far.
If you think you don't need coaching then ask yourself this…why does Tiger Woods still work with a coach?
I share, because I care
