1. Good, Bad or Ugly?
The media is always looking for exclusive breaking stories…but this desire to be first out with a story causes many of them to be either blown out of proportion or even worse, to be completely inaccurate.
It’s no secret that in Canada we like our hockey! So when breaking news came out about the death of Pat Burns, a famous hockey coach, it was a very sad day. But it turned into a national day of embarrassment when, hours after the story broke, Pat Burns took to twitter and called some of his media friends to say he was still alive and doing well.
I see this sort of thing happen weekly with entertainment news: On Monday we get a report that Celebrity A was caught cheating over the weekend…and on Tuesday we get a retraction saying the story turned out to be false!
What happens if something like this happens intentionally for Publicity?
(And yes, it does happen.) When we, the media, find out…let’s just say, it’s not pretty!
The latest example is the crazy Hollywood couple, Heidi and Spencer Pratt. They faked their divorce news just for publicity. (Not that I expect much moral high ground from these two anyway), but when I found out it was a hoax I knew I would never be mentioning them again on my radio show. And I’ll bet I’m not the only one who said, ”Hey the joke is on you guys…bye-bye publicity!”
When dealing with media you can always TWIST the angle…but DON’T mess with the truth!
What’s your vote for Publicity games like the Pratt’s…Good, Bad or ugly? I’m definitely saying UGLY!

Let Me End With This Client Story
Maddy was excited to share what had happened with him just this past Monday at a station in the UK.
“I walked in to a radio station, at 11am, just to have a tour, as I have never been in a studio.
”At 11:30am a producer approaches me and says, ‘Our guest won’t be able to make it this afternoon, would you mind going today (in next 30mins) instead of later this week?’
“I said, ‘Yeah sure.’
”I was nervous and had butterflies in my stomach at 11:50am but after I entered the studio it all went well.
”Thanks Wayne for helping me build my confidence and get my message ready for the media!”
